Signum is Latin for sign and can carry the sense of a mark, indication, or signal.

Originally drawn entirely by hand in dark blue ballpoint pen, Signum explores one simple idea: through Christ, we have a signal straight to Heaven.

At the center of the composition stands the Crucifix. Everything else moves around it and upward from it because Christ is the center of the passage, the Way through which we are brought to the Father.

The great forms surrounding the Crucifix are intentionally ambiguous. They are clouds and wings, evoking Heaven, divine presence, and the cloud of witnesses surrounding the Christian life. Yet their shape also recalls the parting of the sea, opening a path where there seemed to be none. Within them can be seen the form of Noah's Ark, another biblical image of passage, preservation, and salvation.

Together, these forms appear almost as a cloud being opened, a portal or passage with the Crucifix directly at its center.

Even the shadows beneath them move upward and inward, resembling a road disappearing into the distance. Everything in the composition draws the eye upward, like a way being opened, a path leading straight to Heaven.

Above the Crucifix, a series of curved lines takes inspiration from an unexpectedly modern symbol: the Wi-Fi signal.

That visual reference gives Signum its central metaphor. Prayer is communion with God. The Christian is not cut off from Heaven. Through Jesus Christ, there is a direct line of communication, a signal.

But the Crucifix is essential to that meaning. The connection is not presented apart from Christ's Passion. In contemplating His suffering, entering into His Passion through prayer, and uniting our own suffering to His, we encounter the One who has already opened the way.

The ancient symbol of the Cross and the modern symbol of a signal meet in a single image:

Christ is the Way.
The Cross is the sign.
Prayer is the connection.
Heaven is not silent.

About the Canvas

This 16 × 20 inch (40 × 50 cm) canvas reproduction brings Signum into a larger format while preserving the character of Angelica De Jesus' original hand-drawn work.
