Everything else moves around it and upward from it because Christ is the center of the passage, the Way through which we are brought to the Father.

The great forms surrounding the Crucifix are intentionally ambiguous. They are clouds and wings, evoking Heaven, divine presence, and the cloud of witnesses surrounding the Christian life. Yet their shape also recalls the parting of the sea, opening a path where there seemed to be none. Prayer is communion with God; the Christian is not cut off from Heaven. Through Jesus Christ, there is a direct line of communication, a signal.

But the Crucifix is essential to that meaning. The connection is not presented apart from Christ's Passion.
